The 40-year-old hitmaker released a joint statement with her husband, revealing that they had taken their time reaching the heartbreaking decision, but were both “dedicated to remaining friends.”

“After much soul searching and consideration we have made the decision to separate as a couple,” they told People magazine on Wednesday. “We are, however, dedicated to remaining friends.

“There will be no further comment.”

The Chandelier star – whose full name is Sia Kate Isobelle Furler – married Erik at her home in Palm Springs, California in August 2014 after announcing in June of that year they were engaged.

The Aussie pop singer, who is known for her aversion to fame, confirmed their union eight months after tying the knot, admitting that it took a while for her husband to visit her homeland because of the public attention they received.

“It’s kind of disappointing because we can’t do anything,” she said at the time. “I’m kind of a bit famous. I didn’t realise I’m so famous. It’s crazy but I’m thinking I might rock a [disguise]. I’ve got some plans. We would really like to get out but also the rain is pretty crazy.”

Uncomfortable in the spotlight, Sia often hides her face behind masks, heavy paint and, most notably, a blonde bobbed wig with serious bangs to protect her privacy, as she previously revealed she feels “hunted” by the paparazzi.

“It’s unpleasant. It makes me feel hunted,” she explained. “My friends were with me the other day when the paps were at the airport and it was like they all got diarrhea and I had to explain… you go into fight or flight (mode).

“You feel like prey and they’re the predator and you’re being hunted. Would you like to spend your life feeling like prey? Probably not… It’s just wanting to have a regular life, just like a regular person but still be able to make music and sing. But to do that without having to sacrifice having just a regular life, that’s all I want.”

There’s a good chance that her next album will feature songs inspired by the couple’s shock split, as the Cheap Thrills singer openly discussed how she previously penned an emotional song about Erik when they first met.

She confessed: “It’s not really my jam although I did write one right before we got together I like to say is about us. I’m trying to pitch that to Maroon 5 or Bruno Mars.

“You’ll hear it. It’s called Step By Step. It’s a good one,” she added.
