From ‘sick face’ to ‘dinosaur’ - Apple shows off some of this year's 56 new emoji

Have you ever found yourself typing a message and thought, ‘You know what, I wish there was an emoji for ‘elf’ or ‘dinosaur’’?

If so, you’re in luck – as Apple has shown off a sneak preview of some of the 56 new emoji coming to iOS, Mac and Apple Watch later this year.

The emoji include some self-explanatory ones such as a ‘being sick’ emoji, and an ‘exploding head’ – along with a few odder ones.

For instance, there’s quite a few involving fantasy characters – and a zebra.

Others include a breastfeeding woman and a woman in a headscarf.

Apple’s Tim Cook announced the new emoji in a Tweet, saying ‘We have some new ones to show you later this year.’

Apple’s new emoji are based on 56 new characters announced by Unicode Consortium last month.

Unicode is a non-profit group which makes standard characters for use across different computer software – so, with these emoji, other companies will also do their own versions.

The new emoji are already available as part of Google’s Android O beta – and are expected to launch as part of iOS 11 later in the year.
