Every week, hundreds of criminals step through the front doors of the region's courts to face their fate.

Some are handed lengthy prison sentences, whereas others are given a second chance and made the subject of suspended sentence orders - meaning if they get into any more trouble they will find themselves behind bars - or community orders.

A whole range of sentences cover a whole range of crimes, with the judges across our courts delivering what they think will be best to serve the community outside the walls they work in.

Convicted Doncaster paedophile Sadler, 25, was jailed on Tuesday after being caught talking to an undercover officer posing online as a child named Jayden.

Sadler had previously be convicted for sexual activity with a child and was made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order, which he breached in July 2024. Sheffield Crown Court heard he failed to disclose items - including an Alcatel phone - and had made sexual comments towards who he believed to be a young boy.

He was arrested on July 24 this year. Sadler, who appeared over a video link from HMP Doncaster, was told by Recorder Smith: "You made a firm decision in this case that you were doing to use devices you didn't disclose. The Probation Service take the view you are a risk of causing serious harm."

Sadler sobbed as he was made the subject of an extended sentence made up of 22 months in custody and a 24-month extended licence period. He will have to serve two-thirds of the custodial sentence in prison before going before the Parole Board who will determine if he is safe to be released.

Chaksun Ho

Ho, 58, was caught with thousands of indecent images of children after police attended at the home he shared with his wife.

He was jailed for 12 months earlier this week after pleading guilty to four counts of possession of indecent images and a count of possession of extreme pornography. Leeds Crown Court heard on Wednesday how a number of devices were seized when police went to his home in June last year.

Prosecutor Heather Gimore said: "He said he had downloaded indecent images of children while he had been in Hong Kong and they had been deleted. The devices were submitted for examination. The defendant left the country to go back to China to see his father, who was ill. That meant he wasn't interviewed until September 2024."

The court heard Ho had 1,231 category A images, 1,762 category B images, 180,015 category C images, 69, prohibited images of children and one image of extreme pornography. It was said some of the images showed toddlers, and others showed children being tied up.

Mitigating, Robert Stevenson told the court Ho came to the UK from Hong Kong in 2022 with his wife, and did a lot of voluntary work between then and the police going to his home. He said he wants to return to China after serving his sentence and added: "He is remorseful and pleaded guilty at the first opportunity."

Ho was told he will be released from custody halfway through his sentence and will be subject to notification requirements and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the next ten years.

Steven Livsey

Livsey was confronted by members of an online paedophile-hunter group after he believed he was talking to a 13-year-old girl.

Bradford Crown Court heard on Wednesday that a member of the group had set up a decoy profile of the teenager on Facebook and back in September 2022 she was sent a friend request by the-now 25-year-old Livesey, who said she was “too young” and blocked her. He later contacted her again and engaged in sexualised chat with her.

Joseph Bell, prosecuting, said: “He acknowledged that she was too young and asked her not to report him,"

The court heard that Livesey sent indecent images of himself and suggested that the girl’s school was not teaching her sex education properly. Mr Bell said Livesey explicitly told the decoy he wanted to have sex with her and asked her to keep the conversations as “a little secret."

Livesey provided the decoy with his home address and soon after he was confronted by members of the online group and the police arrived to arrest him. Livesey, of Huddersfield Road, Elland, admitted offences of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and attempting to cause a child to watch a sexual act during a hearing at the crown court in August.

He was sentenced to 12 months suspended for two years and ordered to take part in up to 40 rehabilitation activity requirement days. Livesey was also told he must register as a sex offender with the police for the next 10 years and comply with the terms of a sexual harm prevention order for the same period of time.

The court heard that Livesey had been assessed as being a low risk of re-offending and the judge also took into account the assessment provided by a psychologist.
