Silent Witness spoilers follow.

Long-running BBC One crime drama Silent Witness has just aired its latest season premiere starring a well-known Hogwarts face.

Harry Potter actress Evanna Lynch, who played Luna Lovegood in the movies, appeared on tonight's (September 6) first episode of the 24th season titled 'Redemption'.

The first part of the two-arc storyline saw Dr Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) having to face an old threat after a fight broke out in a prison.

When an inmate was found dead, Nikki thought his cellmate and school shooter Scott Weston (Elliott Tittensor) from season 13 had something to do with it.

Lynch played Scott's girlfriend Paisley Robinson, visiting him in prison and advocating for his case review. Scott, in fact, was appealing for parole thanks to the help of a renowned psychologist.

Nikki was still shaken up and haunted by the memories of the school shooting that happened ten years prior. Trying to prevent Scott from being released, she sought the help of his mother, Pamela (Connie Walker), who also thought her son should serve his full sentence.

Nikki was able to have the hearing postponed after evidence of Scott's footprint was found on the body of the dead inmate.

The episode divided fans on social media, who were excited for this shocking return and still sad over the departure of major cast members Liz Carr and Richard Lintern. At the end of last season, Carr's Clarissa Mullery and Lintern's Thomas Chamberlain left the show to the chagrin of viewers.

But many were happy to see Lynch in a role on the show. Despite hers being but a small part, it's safe to say the Irish actress will return for the second half of the episode, airing on BBC One tomorrow (September 7).

Silent Witness airs on BBC One. Series 23 is now available.
