Silent Witness continued on BBC One on Wednesday night (January 9) with the conclusion of 'Two Spirits'.

The two-part episode focused on the trans community, with a trans man being found murdered and trans activist Evie kidnapped.

Episode one ended with soldier Nick Marlow (Andrew Knott) being released from police custody and seen going to a bar. Later, there was another murder at the bar, making Marlow now the prime suspect.

But with Marlow looking extremely guilty, someone had to take the blame for his release from custody – and sadly the buck was passed to Dr Thomas Chamberlain (Richard Lintern) by SIO Cramer.

Chamberlain found himself taking the blame for Marlow's release as he had failed to mention the presence of GBH in the victims.

While Chamberlain had been following correct procedure, Cramer seemed determined to place the blame on him and said he would be making a formal complaint to Home Office which would look into everyone at the Lyell Centre.

But while Chamberlain's future at the Lyell seemed uncertain, he did have another option. In episode one, he was offered a faculty head position at UCL, but had turned it down.

Now, with the Lyell Centre facing an investigation, Chamberlain was reconsidering his decision.

But the prospect of losing the forensic pathologist was more than many fans of the show could take.

The team (thanks to Chamberlain) were eventually able to find the kidnapped Evie alive in an abandoned factory and after putting the pieces together, it was discovered that the killer was Beth Roscoe, the ex-partner of trans activist Kelly Hayes.

Beth had targeted those who worked for the helpline and had helped Kelly through her transition.

With the case closed, Cramer was taken off the investigation and Chamberlain was thanked by Marlow for always believing in him.

While Chamberlain wanted to put it all down to a team effort, Marlow reminded him that he was the leader and deserved the credit.

Chamberlain also got an apology from Cramer, who dropped his complaint against him and the Lyell Centre.

The episode ended with Chamberlain making the right decision and telling UCL that he'd decided to stay on at the Lyell, so fans (and the rest of his team) could breathe a sigh of relief.

Silent Witness continues next Tuesday (January 15) at 9pm on BBC One.
