Simon Cowell has spoken about the lightbulb moment that he thought up Britain's Got Talent – and it all came while watching a rival show.

The ITV series first debuted back in 2007 and has spawned stars in the likes of Susan Boyle and Diversity, as well as numerous international iterations.

However, in a new interview with The Paul McKenna Positivity Podcast, Simon opened up about originally conceiving the idea for the series.

"It was just an idea I had in the kitchen one day. I was watching another competing music show and a girl was murdering 'Get Here' by Oleta Adams," he recalled.

"I thought, 'Do you know what, I would actually rather watch a show about a singing dog'. And that's how Got Talent came along."

The judge added: "And we developed it over a year and then we sold it. And this show will run for 20 years."

Well, it's been going for 12 so far, so it's well over halfway to meeting that target.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Ant McPartlin will be returning to co-present the new series of Britain's Got Talent, after taking a year off from the spotlight.

Britain's Got Talent is due to return in the spring on ITV.
