Simon Cowell has said that he is ‘sorry’ for making One Direction famous after they have mostly ignored him when it came to solo careers.

The music mogul says he was shocked when, for example, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne went elsewheres to launch their careers as solo stars.

Speaking to reporters at the America’s Got Talent season finale, he said: “I hear so many things now, which they’re doing, which I’m not involved with. It’s a bit like I’m getting the hint you don’t want me to come to the party. Sorry for making you famous …”

He admitted that he is ‘bitter’ about the boys’ decision to sign contracts elsewheres.

"Look, I’m not going to lie when I hear they’re doing something, and they haven’t approached me. You think, ‘Well I would have liked you to,’ but it’s their choice. I’m not bitter - much.”

However, there was one project that insists he was happy NOT to be a part of - asked about Zayn Malik’s upcoming memoir, Simon said how he ‘doesn’t care’ that he had no involvement.

“You know what? I genuinely don’t care,” he told reporters.

The comments come just days after Simon said how he does wish that Zayn had consulted with him about his new TV show in which he attempts to make a successful boyband.

He said: "Nothing surprises me anymore. I think he should have come to me with it, if I’m being honest with you. I do actually believe that when they’ve got these ideas, bearing in mind where we started, they should actually come to me.”
