Radio veteran Simon Mayo has made a triumphant return to the airwaves with a successful opening slot on a new classical station.

Mayo is hosting a mid-morning show on Scala Radio, which broadcast for the first time on Monday – two months on from leaving his prime time BBC Radio Two slot.

Social media users took to Twitter to give their opinions.

Others echoed the sentiments.

Mayo told his Twitter followers about his nerves – confessing he had had trouble sleeping.

“This sleep thing doesn’t really work when you’ve got a new radio station to launch,” he tweeted.

The broadcaster’s time at BBC Radio Two ended under a cloud after he was joined by fellow DJ Jo Whiley on his drive time show for the last seven months of his eight-year run.

The change saw a backlash from his usual listeners, with the reaction culminating in Mayo leaving the station.

Mayo later admitted it had been “an awkward, stressful few months”, saying he and Whiley had “worked very hard to make the show as good as it could be.”

He used his new venture at Scala Radio to show he held no animosity, opening the slot by dedicating a track to “old friend” Jo Whiley.

One Twitter used referred to Mayo as ‘a class act’ after the dedication. This feeling was shared by Whiley herself who responded: “That he is,”

Features on his show included a “Mayo clinic” for “everyday queries” and a trivia quiz called Op Master.

Mayo will continue to co-host his Radio 5 Live film show with Mark Kermode, who has also been given his own show on Scala.
