Simple Minds star dies as tributes pour in for band member

Former Simple Minds' drummer Kenny Hyslop, has died aged 73. Ultravox star, Midge Ure, 70, revealed the news as he paid tribute to his friend.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, he said: "Just about to board the British Airways flight from JFK and heard my old friend/Slik/Simple Minds drummer Kenny Hyslop has passed way. He lived a lively life! Huge condolences to his friends and family. He was much loved."

Kenny's cause of death is not not yet known, but it iis believed he had been ill for some time, the Mirror reports. He joined Midge Ure's band Salvation - later named Silk- in 1972. He later became part of Simple Minds replacing Brian McGee, and performing with the group for a year.

He featured on the song Promised You a Miracle and appeared in the videos of the band's hits, Sweat in Bullet and Love Song, though he did not record the tracks.

Following the sad news of Kenny's death, fans of the Scot flocked to social media to pay their respects. One wrote: "So sad, chatted to Kenny quite a bit online in the last few years met him over 40 years ago. One hell of a drummer! Fly straight Kenny."

Another shared: "It doesn't seem fair, it only seemed that a month or so ago, I messaged him and he told me that his treatment was going well". A third posted: "Such very, very sad news. May he rest in eternal peace." While a fourth said: "Rest in peace, Kenny. Loved your drumming."

Kenny, who was born in Helensburgh in 1951, spent most of his life working in the music industry both in the UK and in Canada. The Glasgow-based band became known for their string of hits including, Don't You and Alive And Kicking.

As well as Simple Minds, he performed with Set The Tone, The O'Clock Gang and the blues band Big George and the Business. In his later years, he taught drumming at Carlton Studios in Glasgow, as well as producing new music, which he published through Myspace.
