It's one of the most commonly asked questions about gardens - and for good reason. Not only will a south-facing garden mean you get sunlight all day and into the evening, it can put thousands of pounds onto the price of your home when it comes to selling.

A south-facing garden faces mainly to the south, with gardens that face the south-west and south-east also considered south-facing. Whereas a south-facing garden will get sunshine all day, a west-facing garden gets good sunshine in the evening and an easterly garden gets it in the morning.

A north-facing garden will get some sun in both the morning and evening, while sunshine during the day may be confined to the back of the garden. If you’re lucky enough to have a south-facing garden, you could be looking at an additional £22,000 on the value of your property, according to research by Rightmove.

Those properties also sell quicker than others - on average two days faster. But how can you easily check whether a garden is south-facing?

Luckily all you need is your mobile phone. According to estate agent Whitegates, the easiest way to tell if your garden is south-facing is to stand in it, facing to the rear and use a compass or app on your phone.

If the compass says 'south', your garden is south-facing. If you're not able to stand in the garden and want to figure out if the garden is south-facing on a property you want to buy, you can also use Google Maps.

Experts at Whitegates advise people to type in the address of the property on Google and select ‘Maps’, before selecting the ‘Satellite’ view. A compass will appear on the bottom right of the screen with the red section pointing north and white section pointing south.

If you hold down ‘CTRL’ and spin the map so you’re looking at the front of the house, you can then see if the white section of the compass is on top, which means the garden is south-facing.
