A non-invasive gentle approach to weight loss could become the next step for many in their desperate journey to shed stubborn weight. Light therapy may seem like something from a science-fiction novel but it’s a very real service first created by NASA to help aid astronauts and is now being brought down to earth.

Scott Chaverri, founder and CEO of Mito Red Light, explained that the therapy can work alongside any relatively healthy diet and exercise routine, meaning there’s no additional strict requirements people will have to shift to. It works by targeting fat cells beneath the skin with specific wavelengths of red and blue light.

This releases the stored substances in these cells and allows the body to utilise and dispose of it like it would naturally during any weight loss regime. One study showed people lost roughly 3 inches around their waist, hips and thighs within 6 weeks of receiving treatments while following their usual routines.

While its uses for weight loss aren’t disputed in the medical community, most reports indicate it only has modest results with clinics usually requiring 6 sessions before clients should expect results. However, Chaverri added: “What's exciting about this approach is how simple it is. You don't need to completely overhaul your lifestyle. It works alongside whatever healthy changes you're already making.”

Additionally, patients also often report some other additional benefits from the treatments as it allows them to specifically target problem areas, shaping and contouring their bodies exactly as they wanted and helping to keep them motivated by getting to the most stubborn bits. Research in the International Journal of Endocrinology also found having treatments in the morning helped to regulate the hormones that control appetite and eating behaviours.

Chaverri added: “People want solutions that work with their lifestyle, not against it. Light therapy fits seamlessly into daily routines without requiring dramatic schedule changes or pushing yourself to extremes. Seeing measurable progress makes it easier to stick with healthy lifestyle changes. This treatment helps people create lasting results rather than temporary fixes that fade away.”

A 2020 study found 2 sessions a weekly for 6 weeks paired with weight loss diets and exercise delivered optimal results. This also wasn’t exclusive to weight loss as the Lasers in Medical Science study also found the therapy benefited overall metabolic health.
