The Simpsons is going old school for its annual Treehouse of Horror special this year.

For 27 years now, The Simpsons has paid tribute to the classic themes and films of the horror genre - and this year's Treehouse of Horror has perhaps the coolest homage yet.

According to TV Line, The Exorcist director William Friedkin is lending his voice to 'Treehouse of Horror XXVIII' as a mysterious doctor called Kenneth Humphries, in a chapter called 'MMM… Homer'.

Dr Humphries will arrive in Springfield as Homer starts eating himself when he runs out of food while Marge and the kids are out of town. Can he cure Homer's appetite… or does he have something up his sleeve?

In another fun nod to The Exorcist, the TV spin-off's Ben Daniels will also cameo in a separate chapter called 'Exor-sis'. Suddenly we're really worried for Maggie and Lisa.

Also coming up this season on The Simpsons will be cameos from pop superstar Ed Sheeran in a La La Land parody and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (aka Jaime Lannister) in a send-up of Game of Thrones.

There seems to be no end in sight for the beloved animated comedy, as Fox TV Chairman and CEO Dana Walden revealed at the TCA press tour earlier in the month.

The Simpsons will air its Halloween special this year on Sunday, October 22 at 8pm ET in the US. Sky1 airs the show in the UK.
