The Simpsons seems to have become the oracle of our times, predicting everything from Donald Trump winning the US Presidency to Lady Gaga's Super Bowl halftime show.

Well, it looks like it had another one up its sleeve all the way back in the 1990s, when it joked about Disney owning Fox.

In case you missed it, it was announced today (December 14) that Disney had bought 21st Century Fox's entertainment's assets for $52.4 billion (£39bn) – which interestingly includes The Simpsons.

However, it seems it knew it before us in the 1998 episode 'When You Dish Upon a Star', where we see a studio sign showing 20th Century Fox (a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox) along with the words "a division of Walt Disney Co".

Spooky indeed. At this rate we will have to start looking at the show more closely to see what other news is to come.

The episode itself sees Homer befriend Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger, and the shot in question precedes a scene where Ron Howard tries to pitch a script written by Homer to producer Brian Grazer.

The confirmed deal will see Disney buy Fox's film and TV studio, the National Geographic and FX cable channels, as well as business, regional sports networks, international networks and Fox's 30% stake in Hulu.

Fox's 39% stake in Sky has now gone to Disney too, which – if Fox's proposed takeover goes through – would see Disney own Sky in the not-too-distant future.

The deal also means majority stakes in shows such as The Simpsons, so we imagine there will be a lot more jokes in the show about Disney in the vein of its Fox ribbings now.
