Singapore to send 9 ambulances, 2 fire engines and other aid to Ukraine

SINGAPORE — Singapore’s government will contribute a humanitarian assistance package to Ukraine, as requested by the war-torn country.

The package comprises nine ambulances, two fire engines, various firefighting protective gear, rescue equipment, mine detectors and medical supplies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement on Friday (10 June).

“This assistance package was put together by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Defence to support international efforts, given the growing humanitarian crisis and needs in Ukraine,” MFA added.

The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) had separately committed four tranches of humanitarian aid to support Ukrainian refugees totalling $6 million so far.

In a statement on 6 June, SRC said it committed the fourth $2 million tranche of aid comprising medical and first aid kits, medical equipment and medicines for rare diseases, hygiene and essentials.

In addition, at least 120 individuals and groups in Singapore had supported the SRC’s public fundraising appeal to help affected communities in and around Ukraine, with more than $7.4 million raised since the start of the appeal on 25 February, the SRC said then.

Previously, SRC said in April that it had sent a two-person team to Ukraine's neighbouring countries that are hosting most of the refugees, including Hungary, Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia, to oversee the distribution of aid contributed by people in Singapore to SRC's humanitarian response to Ukraine.

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began on 24 February, has drawn global condemnation and a slew of sanctions against the Kremlin and its allies.

At a virtual media conference last Friday, Ukraine’s ambassador to Singapore Kateryna Zelenko urged the world to give more financial and military support to her country as the war enters into the fourth month.
