Singer David Van Day suffers a heart attack aged 59

Dollar star David Van Day is recovering in hospital after suffering a heart attack – just one week after eighties rival Pete Burns died after a cardiac arrest.

David, 59, who starred in a latter-day version of Bucks Fizz for a time, was suffering with chronic chest pain for three days before wife Sue Moxley reportedly rushed him to Queen’s Hospital in Romford, Essex.

He was later referred to St Bartholomew’s Hospital in central London, where doctors refused to let him leave after tests revealed he had a blocked artery and was suffering from cardiac arrest.

Following an emergency operation and stent insertion, David is said to be in a stable condition, and tweeted from his hospital bed last night: “Thanks for all the kind & positive messages I’ve had today I’m hoping to make a speedy recovery so thanks really appreciate your support x.”

His wife has now blamed the heart attack on his unhealthy lifestyle, admitting to The Sun: “He’s not an alcoholic, but he admits he drinks a bit too much and eats more red meat than he should. It’s crazy this happened after Pete’s death.”

David, who is just two years older than the Dead or Alive singer, was propelled into the high-octane celebrity lifestyle as a popstar in the eighties, during which time he allegedly spent £100,000 on cocaine.

He later reinvented himself as a reality TV star, making appearances on Come Dine With Me and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, but continues to perform at private gigs to this day.

His sudden illness comes a week after fellow pop icon Pete Burns passed away, suffering a massive cardiac arrest on Sunday 23 October, aged 57.

We’re sending our warmest wishes to David for a speedy recovery.
