Singer Tom Grennan delighted fans yesterday when he came to Coventry to busk in aid of the Big Issue. He even brought along his grandma, who beamed that she was 'so proud.'

Grennan, who is an avid fan of the Sky Blues, revealed last week that he would be performing in the city to raise funds for the Big Issue, which supports people facing homelessness or those who have recently become unemployed.

Hundreds braved the rain yesterday evening (September 26) to catch a glimpse of the BRIT Award nominee at FarGo Village. He performed singalong favourites including 'Something in the Water' and also debuted his new single 'Higher.'

Grennan said he chose to busk in Coventry despite growing up in Bedford because he 'loves the community.' He told CoventryLive: “I fell in love with this city because of community, because of people that I just saw how much people want to help each other no matter how hard or how tough it has been, everybody wants to just dig in and watch people win.

“So for me, it was like a no-brainer, I was like the Big Issue is all about community, helping people, Coventry means that to me anyway.”

Grennan also told CoventryLive that he is hoping to head to the CBS Arena to watch his beloved Coventry City at some point this year, saying: “I have not even got the chance to go to a football match yet, so I am looking forward to getting back to the Ricoh and just getting stuck in.”

Although the 29-year-old has not gotten around to seeing the Sky Blues, he did spend the day with his grandma Anne who showed him where she grew up in Canley. He said: “It has been nice getting to see where my grandma was brought up, lived in, her street, her story, so it was cool.”

Tom thanked everyone for braving the downpours that soaked the city yesterday, saying: “I know it must be pretty wet out there, so thank you, and I love you very much! It is just good to be back, I have not been here for a while because I have been so busy doing shows and travelling around.”

Grennan said he was 'honoured' to be featured on the front of the Big Issue. He said: “It is a charity that gives people the chance to have an opportunity, the chance to get a job, the chance to put food on the table and help their families out, the people that are selling the Big Issue.

“For me to be involved with it was an honour to be asked really because I am all about community, I am all about helping people, and that is very dear to my heart, so I just knew that it would be a perfect fit for me to be a part of the Big Issue, so the fact that my face is on the front of it is pretty nuts to me.”
