Team GB bagged two silver medals in quick succession in brave attempts to win gold.

First, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor ran hot favourite Katinka Hosszu close in the final of the 200m individual relay, before the men did the same in 4x200m relay - breaking the British record as they hunted down a US team anchored by Michael Phelps, who won his 21st Olympic gold medal of his career.

O’Connor, 20, told the BBC it was the “best feeling in the world”.

“I’m trying not to cry. When I looked up and saw the time and position it didn’t seem real. Seeing my family I was getting choked up, it means everything.”

For the men, it was the best performance in the race for more than a century.
