Sir Elton John performs for royal wedding reception after Meghan and Harry marry

Sir Elton John performed for the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex at their wedding reception, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

This announcement comes following speculation that the 'Tiny Dancer' singer would be one of the individuals chosen to perform on the big day.

He lent his talents to the grand occasion during Prince Harry and Meghan's lunchtime reception, which was hosted by the Queen at St George's Hall in Windsor Castle.

Sir Elton had previously been spotted making his way to the ceremony in St George's Chapel alongside his husband, David Furnish.

He was also seen mingling with other guests, including fellow singer James Blunt.

Sir Elton reportedly has a very close friendship with Prince Harry, having previously been friends with his mother, the late Princess Diana.

Sir Elton first became acquainted with Princess Diana after performing at the 21st birthday party of Prince Andrew at Windsor Castle.

He frequently attended the Prince of Wales' Princes Trust concerts throughout the 1970s.

Sir Elton and Princess Diana reached a rocky stage of their friendship during the late 1990s when he released a book with Gianni Versace that featured photos of her sons alongside other images of semi-nude male models.

However, when Versace passed away in 1997, the pair resolved their relationship.

Sir Elton famously performed at her funeral that same year, singing a rewritten version of 'Candle in the Wind' in honour of his friend.

In January, Sir Elton appeared on ITV's Lorraine during which he spoke about Prince Harry's relationship with Meghan.

"I could tell that he was totally in love," Sir Elton said, having spent time with the prince in Sicily the previous summer.

"He didn't really discuss much personally but he said 'I'm in love' and I thought 'good for you.'

"Both of those boys seem to be ecstatically happy and that's all you want people to be."
