Sir John Hurt is to be honoured at the British Film Institute with a whole season dedicated to his extensive career.

The John Hurt season will take place at BFI Southbank from January 1 to January 31, 2018, marking one year since he sadly passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer at aged 77.

The season was announced at a memorial event held today (June 25) – Sir John Hurt: A Celebration – which featured tributes and memories from some of the people who worked with him throughout his career.

These included BAFTA award-winning director Sir Alan Parker, Oscar-winning producer Jeremy Thomas, Stephen Fry, Toby Jones and Penelope Wilton and Cathy Ashton.

Sir John is one the most celebrated actors of our time, with a career that spanned over six decades across TV, film and stage.

He earned four BAFTAs, a Golden Globe and was nominated twice for an Academy Award for his efforts, with his portrayal of a heroin addict in 1978's Midnight Express earning him one of those Oscar nominations, as well as his Golden Globe win.

Hurt then went on to receive a BAFTA nomination and a second Oscar nomination for playing the tragic figure John Merrick in Twin Peaks co-creator David Lynch's version of The Elephant Man.

Other memorable roles include voicing Aragorn in the original animated Lord of the Rings movie, the wand-maker Mr Ollivander in the Harry Potter movie series and, of course, as Kane in Sir Ridley Scott's iconic Alien film.

Later in his career, Sir John reached an entirely new generation of fans as the lost War Doctor in Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special 'The Day of the Doctor', a role which he reprised for a series of Big Finish audio dramas.

He was knighted in the 2015 New Year Honours List for his contribution to drama.
