The leader of the Labour Party has called on Boris Johnson to speak to President Trump about the death of George Floyd.

Sir Keir Starmer expressed his "shock and anger" over the death of Mr Floyd and questioned why the Prime Minister had not yet spoken out over the incident.

Sir Keir told the Commons: “Can I start by expressing shock and anger at the death of George Floyd.

"This has shone a light on racism and hatred experienced by many in the US and beyond.

"I'm surprised the Prime Minister hasn’t said anything about this yet.

"But I do hope that the next time he speaks to President Trump he will convey to him the UK's abhorrence about his response to the events."

Boris Johnson replied: “Let me begin associating myself absolutely with what the Right Honourable gentleman had to say about the death of George Floyd and I think what happened in the United States was appalling, it was inexcusable.

"We all saw it on our screens. And I perfectly understand people’s right to protest what took place.

"Though obviously I also believe that protest should take place in a lawful and reasonable way.”
