The Sister's Russell Tovey has explained why filming ITV's new unsettling series left him feeling "f**ked."
Based on Burial, the popular book by Luther creator Neil Cross, the psychological thriller follows Nathan and Bob (Bertie Carvel), as they try to keep a dark story from their past a secret. Something that proves difficult when, 11 years after the initial incident, the ground in which they hid the evidence is being dug up in preparation for a new housing development.
Ahead of the four-parter's premiere on October 26, Tovey recalled what it was like bringing the novel to life and how he felt like he "had to commit" to the role of Nathan, or else it wouldn't have worked.
"The thing about this is you exist in this contained tension where whatever you're saying is not being said, and there is anxiety and absolute fear and panic the whole time," the Years and Years actor told Digital Spy and other media.
"It's being suppressed, and I really wanted to serve Nathan. I wanted to create something that people hadn't seen me do that was really small and really minimal and it's all about Nathan trying to disappear. He wants to be invisible, but living in that energy was a lot.
Tovey went on to say that it wasn't until they finished shooting that he suddenly became aware of how "absolutely exhausted" the production had made him.
"F**ked," he remembered. "I was just like, 'Wow.' As an actor on set, I'm normally quite jovial and cheeky, and I think on this one people probably think I'm a right moody git.
"I don't really take work home that much. I've done a play before. I did Angels in America at the National, which I took home. Then when I started this one, I took it home."
The Sister begins on Monday, October 26 on ITV at 9pm.
