Six of the best high street sandwiches, tried and tested

Looking to branch out from that same sandwich each day? Try one of these

From Vietnamesebanh mi and Venezuelan arepas to our own cheese and pickle on sliced white, each culture has its own, cherished sandwiches.

Here in Britain we take sarnie love to the next level: the average person in this country eats more than 18,000 in their lifetime, spending almost £50,000 on sandwiches. One survey even found that 56 per cent of us eat one every day.

Our favourites remain the same: BLT, chicken mayo, ham and cheese, and such like. Another research exercise glumly concluded that a third of us were happy to tuck into the same filling each day.

If you are getting a little tired of the same old sarnie, you're in luck because supermarkets and coffee chains are expanding their offerings like never before. Just this month, M&S launched a street-food range, with exotic delights such as chicken katsu sando and tandoori chicken naan wrap on offer.

Here are six of the best options if you're looking for a new lunchtime favourite.

Aldi Specially Selected New York deli pastrami & emmental

£1.99

Generous layers of juicy, peppery pastrami; thick, crunchy pickles; strong, nutty emmental; and tangy sauerkrout and mustard mayo. Well balanced and housed in soft rye. Divine (and the cheapest of the lot, too).

Sainsbury's On The Go Greek style chicken and tzatziki wrap

It's all the same texture: soft. The chicken, the wrap, the tomatoes. All soft. The saving grace is the herbaceous hit from the oregano wrap itself, which lifts this otherwise one-note lunch.

5/10

Pret avo, olives & toms

£3.50

An initial hit of tang, from the tapenade and sun-dried tomatoes, threatens to overwhelm. It is balanced out, however, by ample peppery rocket, generous avocado and a much-needed pine nut crunch. The bread is a tad soggy, though pleasingly chewy. Vibrant and summery.

8/10

Heston from Waitrose salt beef pretzel sub

£3.60

Incredibly salty, which is unsurprising considering the sauerkraut, pickle and salt beef. The bun is nicely soft and spongy, and the mustard provides a punchy tang, but the emmental isn't quite strong enough.

7/10

Tesco southern fried chicken wrap

£2.50

There's a profound beigeness to chicken coated in breadcrumbs and then mummified in a wrap, but the crunchy lettuce and red pepper mayo go some way to mitigating the blandness.

6/10

M&S sriracha chicken wrap

£3.50

In contrast to most chicken wraps available, the heat and pickles see off the blandness. The chicken is delicious, as is the spicy sauce and intense pickled carrots, which add crunch. Almost too much going on.
