Six fire engines were deployed to a city centre tower block - and it was all a false alarm. The engines were positioned on Clough Street and Marsh Street, in Hanley, yesterday afternoon.

It followed reports of smoke coming from the top of the BT building. But investigations later discovered the smoke was linked to an 'engineer carrying out equipment testing'.

A Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We received a report that smoke was seen coming from the top of the BT building. However, it is believed that this was due to an engineer carrying out equipment testing. A drone was deployed as a precaution."
