Sky Glows Orange in French Riviera as Wildfire Grows

Thousands of tourists and residents have been evacuated from areas surrounding a wildfire in France’s southeastern Var department that broke out on Monday, August 16.

Evacuations were in place around the villages of Grimaud and La Mole, in the countryside west of Saint Tropez. Twelve campsites were evacuated, the local government said, and one was lost to the flames.

Fueled by extreme heat and strong winds, the fire had burned 19 square miles (5,000 hectares) by the early hours of Tuesday, August 17. More than 1,000 personnel, with air support, were deployed.
