Sky News presenter Kay Burley interrupted her breakfast show with an urgent update on Tuesday morning, capturing the viewers' attention with breaking news. She detailed fresh forecasts suggesting the UK's population is expected to reach 72.5 million by mid-2032.

Burley highlighted that this uptick is largely due to increasing net migration, projected at approximately 4.9 million by 2023 as per the recent Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures. The UK is preparing for a boom in its population, set to swell by about five million in less than a decade.

Reflecting on the data, Burley noted: "They are telling us that the UK population is projected to rise by almost five million, that's 7.3 per cent from 2022 to 2032."

Additionally, she questioned Keir Starmer’s plans regarding necessary infrastructure expansions, stating: "All that infrastructure that we're hearing about from the prime minister, we're going to need it, aren't we? Because apparently the population is projected to rise by 7.3 per cent in the next 10 years."

Burley concluded with: "Almost five million extra people here in the UK during that time. I'm sure the prime minister will have something to say about that, along with the chancellor when they make their speeches tomorrow."

The conversation on immigration intensified as Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp voiced his concerns about the numbers, reports the Mirror.

He said: "Ten million arrivals over ten years is far too high. We need a binding legal cap on visas issued each year which is very, very substantially lower than this in order to get the numbers down and under control."

Echoing similar sentiments, Tory MP and former Home Office advisor Nick Timothy revealed: "Today the ONS forecasts the annual net migration will be half a million a year for the next decade."

He underscored the urgency with a direct statement: "This must not happen. We need to cut the numbers drastically. And we need to deport the criminals and illegal immigrants who should not be here."

According to projections, England's population is set to rise faster than other UK regions, increasing by 7.8 per cent by mid-2032, while Wales sees a 5.9 per cent growth, Scotland at 4.4 per cent, and Northern Ireland at 2.1 per cent. Kay Burley, having joined Sky News during its inception in 1989, has established herself as a prominent journalist with her challenging style of interviewing.
