Sky Q box set for major upgrade this February that viewers have been clamouring for
If you've got the premium Sky Q box, it might have felt a little less premium over the last few years. Sky's eyes have been firmly set on Sky Glass, their integrated TV unit, and Sky Stream, their new, smaller box that runs entirely off your WiFi.
But the time has come for a little love to be shown to the Sky Q box, which as of December 2024, had a place in around 11 million homes in the UK. Updates have stagnated as the box reaches it's 10th year on the market, but luckily, that is changing.
Channel 5 has confirmed - via an update - that Sky Q is getting a blockbuster boost later this month. Yes, Q boxes are finally getting full access to the My 5 app, which will offer homes that use this device the chance to catch up on hours of on-demand content.

While those who use Sky Stream and have a Sky Glass TV have had access for a while now, the time has finally come for the Q to shine again. Before, finding a show you wanted to watch from Channel 5 meant going through the somewhat cumbersome On-Demand section of the menu, but now with full app integration, it's sure to speed up people's binge watching habits.
The latest move comes ahead of Channel 5's rebrand, giving the terrestrial service and app a more simplified '5' branding. Explaining more, Kiaran Saunders, VP Distribution at Paramount UK, said: "Our expanded distribution across Sky Q marks an important milestone in My5’s ongoing growth, enabling us to reach more homes than ever before.
"With the upcoming refresh to 5, we’re thrilled to deliver an even more engaging, streamlined and richer viewing experience for all of our audiences."
This isn't the only update coming from Sky, with the company confirming that it's also revamping its NOW streaming service later this month as well with users getting a new look and improved features.
Despite the good news, Sky Q is still slowly being phased out and many people are choosing streaming services instead. This generation of boxes is the last one where you'll need a satellite dish in order to watch your favourite shows.
Sky are promoting the switch to streaming hard, with standard Netflix included in all Sky Stream packages, with the option to add more onto your TV bill directly. Aiming to be the "no fuss" TV choice in future, Sky are aiming to get in on the gargantuan profits from the streaming industry.
TV lovers were left fuming last week amid suggestions that Netflix users may have to pay the BBC licence fee. The BBC issued a statement on the controversial plan as the labour government look at reforms to the licence fee.
But, you can be safe in the knowledge that your Sky Q box isn't forgotten just yet, and that you are now able to enjoy even more shows through one simple box.
