Declining numbers cause concern for this beautiful resident of the swamps and reed-beds of South Central Africa. With a world population of three to five thousand, its stronghold is the Okavango Delta/Lake Ngami area which is home to the majority of that population (two to three thousand birds). Threatened by habitat loss and an unexplained inability to increase numbers in available habitat it is classified as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species and is subject to the agreement on the Conservation of African- Eurasian Waders (EAWU). Photographed at Moremi on the Okavango Delta, Botswana.
