Slavisa Jokanovic has backed Ryan Sessegnon to make an immediate impact on the Premier League as the Fulham youngster prepares to show his worth in front of one of his many suitors.

Sessegnon was in exceptional form for Fulham as they earned promotion to the Premier League last season, turning the tide in their Championship Play-Off semi-final and that providing the assist for Tom Cairney’s winner at Wembley.

The 18-year-old, who has already made over 70 league appearances for the Cottagers, has been closely monitored by almost every top club in Europe, but Tottenham - Fulham’s opponents on Saturday - have long been ranked among the leading contenders for his signature.

Fulham refused to countenance any interest this summer, and Sessegnon is eager to prove his worth at the club that gave him his first platform to shine. While many of the Cottagers who earned promotion have found themselves usurped by summer signings, most notably Marcus Bettinelli and Stefan Johansen, the young winger is set to play a key role.

“I must be happy [he’s still here],” Jokanovic said. "Ryan Sessegon is one of the most important players from last season.

“We trust he can help us in this challenge that is immediately ahead of us. He’s one of the longest-serving players to play in this team.”

Sessegnon may be causing waves on the pitch but off it is he has proven to be a quiet, unassuming character who shuns the limelight.

Jokanovic could not ask for an easier superstar to manage: “He is one man who didn’t give you so many problems. Sometimes you don’t know if he is on the pitch because you don’t hear so many times his voice!

“But his work is really good. He always pushes really hard, he wants to improve himself, his team-mates and the team. His sensation is really positive.

“I don’t remember any mistakes. All of us can make some mistakes during training or in a game, but this kid is always focused on trying to improve, trying to learn, trying to adapt himself for each situation.”

Jokanovic, who celebrated his 50th birthday on Thursday, also insisted that no progress had been made on talks over his contract. The Serb’s current terms run until the end of the season.
