A doctor has hailed one fruit "nature's sleeping pill" due to it, he claims, being able to help people fall asleep more quickly. Dr Michael Breus, also known as the "Sleep Doctor" told his thousands of social media followers eating the fruit before bed could be hugely beneficial.

Dr Breus said that while many may think eating a banana in the morning will give an energy boost for the day ahead, snacking on the fruit before bedtime could mean a more peaceful night. And bananas aren't the only food the doctor recommends for sleep.

In a video, posted on TikTok, he said: “People ask me all the time, 'What are some good positive foods for sleep?' ... Calcium - a lot of people are low in calcium, and we can get calcium from things like Greek yoghurt, which is a very essential by-product in the sleep process."

Bananas are said to contain a number of nutrients that may help enhance sleep and relaxation, one of these being magnesium. One medium-sized banana (126 grams) contains about 34 mg of magnesium or 8% of a person's recommended daily value.

Research shows magnesium can help people maintain a normal circadian cycle, which refers to your internal body clock that’s responsible for ensuring adequate sleep. Research has also shown that supplementing with 500 mg of magnesium daily may increase melatonin production and reduce the levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
