Slow-moving thunderstorms bring heavy rains to Windsor-Essex, southwestern Ontario
Slow-moving thunderstorms are producing "torrential downpours" in Windsor-Essex and southwestern Ontario on Friday, Environment Canada says.
The federal weather agency issued a rainfall warning just before 11:30 a.m. saying rainfall amounts of 40 to 60 millimetres are possible, continuing into this evening.
"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible," Environment Canada said.
"Heavy rainfall in combination with other weather factors, such as hail, wind and lightning will make outdoor activities unsafe. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop."
The rainfall warning is in effect for Windsor, Essex County, Chatham-Kent and Sarnia-Lambton.
On Friday, the forecast calls for a 60 per cent chance of showers with a high of 27 C.
ERCA issues flood warning for Lakeshore
The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) issued a flood watch for Essex County, and a flood warning for the Municipality of Lakeshore. The flood warning and watch are effective until noon Saturday.
ERCA said that the Lakeshore has been impacted the most by the rainfall on Friday.
People are advised to take "extra caution" and avoid going to areas where flooding is occurring.
"Standing water can also present its own unseen hazards," ERCA said.
People have been advised to keep children, pets and livestock away from flowing as well as standing water.
