'Slurring' Egglescliffe carer three times over drink-drive limit 'jumped in car without thinking'
A "slurring" driver was caught nearly three times over the drink-drive limit.
Paul Gibson was handed an interim ban after pleading guilty to drink driving on Monday. Teesside Magistrates' Court heard the Egglescliffe driver was pulled over by Cleveland Police on Yarm Road, in Stockton, on Tuesday, July 16.
Prosecutor Anne Mitchell said the 39-year-old told police he hadn't drank alcohol but a blood test showed Gibson was nearly three times over the limit. "Police could see that his pupils were large and his speech was slurred," Ms Mitchell said. "He was asked if he'd drank any alcohol and stated he had not."
Ms Mitchell told the Middlesbrough court a road side breath test came back positive and he was arrested. She said: "He underwent the bloods procedure which gave a reading of 237 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood." The legal limit is 80 milligrammes.
The prosecutor said Gibson - who is the sole carer for his elderly mother - has one previous conviction for driving over the prescribed limit. His barrister Ms McCloud said on the day of the offence the defendant's partner - who suffers from epilepsy - started experiencing myoclonic seizures and "without thinking" he jumped in his car.
The court heard he accepts it was "reckless" and admitted the charge. Magistrates adjourned the case for a pre-sentence report.
Gibson, of Grisedale Crescent, will appear in court at 10am November 11. He was granted unconditional bail.
