Famous faces including Will Smith and Dame Helen Mirren have taken part in huge charity event The World's Big Sleep Out, raising awareness of people who are homeless and displaced.

The Hollywood stars each told a bedtime story to people who spent the night sleeping on the streets in solidarity, with Smith reading in Times Square in New York and Dame Mirren telling her story in Trafalgar Square in London.

Other stars reading stories included actor Seth Green in LA and Gavin & Stacey star Ruth Jones in Cardiff.

Several more famous faces got involved by contributing musical performances, speeches and poems, including Rag 'n' Bone Man, Tom Walker, Ellie Goulding and The Script.

A number of other stars decided to show their support by sleeping out on the streets themselves too, with Busted musician Matt Willis sharing a photo of himself with author – and wife of McFly star Tom – Giovanna Fletcher.

Dame Helen Mirren praised the turnout for the event, calling it "a phenomenal success".

She added: "It was heartwarming to see so many people come together to highlight the global issue of homelessness. I was proud to play my part by telling a bedtime story before sleeping out myself."

The World's Big Sleep Out took place across the globe, from New Zealand across to Los Angeles, with events occurring in 52 cities in total and 60,000 people taking part.

100% of funds raised by the public will go towards homelessness charities, with international partners of the campaign including UNICEF USA, Malala Fund and the Institute of Global Homelessness.

The campaign was founded by Josh Littlejohn MBE in Edinburgh and has grown hugely over the past few years.
