Smoke Across Sydney Harbour Paints Eerie Scene

Sydney resident Suzanne Milthorpe captured just how dense the smog from bushfires burning on Sydney’s outskirts became across the city’s harbour in two videos she made on November 21.

She took one video at 6 am as she was on a run in Cremorne Point, on the harbour’s north side. She took a second while on a harbour ferry, passing the Sydney Opera House, with the CBD’s skyline behind shrouded in the gloom.

By Friday, November 22, air quality in Sydney was the ninth poorest of any city in the world. Air quality was at its most hazardous across the city’s northwest. Other areas across the state were also registering very poor to hazardous air quality.

NSW Health warned those with heart or lung conditions to stay indoors and avoid breathing the smoke. Credit: Suzanne Milthorpe via Storyful
