Smoke Billows From White Island Volcano Three Days After Deadly Eruption

New Zealand police said on December 11 that they would delay efforts to recover the bodies of victims of the White Island eruption for a day while dangerous conditions on the volcano continued.

In a statement, police said the recovery would take place the following morning, December 12, despite experts warning there was a “50-60% chance” of another eruption within 24 hours.

The volcano erupted on December 9 while a number of tourists were visiting the island. Eight people have been confirmed dead, while more than 20 remained in a critical condition on Thursday afternoon.
