Smoke and Flames Fill Horizon as Gippsland Fires Prompt Mass Evacuations

Thousands of people were told to evacuate the East Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia, as three major bushfires burned close to popular holiday destinations on Monday, December 30.

“You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive,” a warning by the Country Fire Authority said, urging civilians still in affected area to immediately take shelter indoors. “It is too late to leave.”

There were around 30,000 holidaymakers reported to be in the bushfire-affected area on Sunday, when orders to leave the area were announced.

The Cranbourne Fire Brigade posted this video to their Facebook page late on December 30 with the description: “This is what the firefighters are up against in Gippsland.” Credit: Cranbourne Fire Brigade via Storyful

The Trial of Christine Keeler episode 6, review: Sophie Cookson has shone in this richly drawn portrait of a woman in a world of wicked men

Knowing what’s coming in the final episode of The Trial of Christine Keeler adds to its dramatic power rather than diminishing it. Stephen Ward’s (James Norton) overdose proves fatal. The court verdict, which clears him of prostitution but finds him guilty of living off the “immoral earnings” of Mandy Rice-Davies (Ellie Bamber) and Christine Keeler (Sophie Cookson), is read out to an empty chair. The series has let events breathe throughout, and Ward’s early dispatch gives the final episode room to examine what followed. Keeler is arrested for perjury and put on trial. Her silver-tongued barrister, Jeremy Hutchinson (Paul Ritter), the inspiration for Rumpole, can’t stop her from being sentenced to nine months in prison. Her father Colin (Neil Morrissey) turns up out of the blue, promising to be there for her before promptly selling his story to the papers. Disgraced and alienated from high society, John Profumo (Ben Miles) presents himself at Toynbee Hall in Whitechapel, to work as a social reformer. Their parallel falls from grace are signposted with a floor-scrubbing scene of limited subtlety.

Post divorce, actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to open rosé champagne house together

A wine estate owned by actors and former spouses Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are reportedly teaming up with the Perrin winemaker family and another champagne house in Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Marne to create a specialty rosé champagne, according to reports from Wine Spectator magazine."It will be the only house in Champagne to produce only rosé," Rodolphe Peters, the manager of the Champagne house, told AFP newswire, confirming the magazine’s report. "The volumes will be very reasonable. About 10,000 bottles to start with and we do not plan to produce more than 25,000 bottles in the long term. The ambition is really to develop a benchmark rosé champagne," said Peters. The new venture with the actors is aiming to create a high-quality rosé champagne, utilising the expertise of the Perrin family and the Miraval company, according to Peters. * Champagne harvest starts early, 'very good' vintage predicted * 'Organic' slips slowly into the French champagne industry"It is a family project between Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and their children with the families of winemakers Perrin and Peters, the latter two have known each other for a long time," said Guillaume Jourdan, spokesman for Vitabella PR agency, which handles Varois Miraval.Jolie and Pitt first joined up with the Perrins in 2011 to create the ‘Miraval Côtes de Provence’ rosé wine, taking the name of their shared property in Correns, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. The property includes 500 hectares, including 50 hectares of vines, which they bought in 2008 for 40 million euros.Jourdan said that the group has been working on the project for about three to four years. Additional time would be necessary to create the release date and packaging of the specialty champagne.

Doctor Who review, Fugitive of the Judoon: Latest episode echoes vintage Moffat, but surely fans are exhausted of plot twists by now?

Doctor Who has morphed into a cheery and easily-digested dollop of Sunday night escapism under its latest show runner, Chris Chibnall. He created Broadchurch, which wasn’t always easy to follow and certainly not cheery. So kudos to him for broadening his range. The inevitable criticism, however, is that this straightforwardness comes at a price – that New Who lacks the devilish complexity that was a hallmark when Sherlock’s Steven Moffat was steering the Tardis. Some fans prefer Chibnall’s vision. Others do not. One or two – and you’re going to have to trust me on this – have even taken to the internet to discreetly share their concerns.
