'Smokenado' Swirls in North-Central Texas as Destructive Wildfire Rages On

A “smokenado” fire whirl was seen in Somervell County, Texas, as efforts to suppress the Chalk Mountain fire continued.

On Wednesday, July 20, local media reported that the fire destroyed at least 16 homes and damaged five others, as critical fire weather continued to exacerbate wildfires throughout the state.

This footage was captured by Kenneth Green, a local official who said he recorded it late on Monday afternoon, and shows the fire burning near Glen Rose late Monday afternoon.

By Thursday morning, the Chalk Mountain fire burned 6,701 acres and was 10 percent contained, according to official reports. Credit: Kenneth Green via Storyful
