Smoking materials suspected of sparking house blaze in South Bank

A house in South Bank was left with extensive damage after a blaze thought to have been caused by smoking materials.

Cleveland Fire Brigade was called at 9.15pm on Tuesday, February 4, to Upper Princess Street where the property was on fire. No-one is thought to have been injured in the incident.

Police also attended and said enquiries were ongoing into the cause of the blaze. The first floor was gutted and the fire caused extensive smoke damage to the remainder of the property.

A spokesperson said: "Cleveland Fire Brigade were called on 04/02/2025 at 9.15pm to an incident on Upper Princess Street in South Bank, Middlesbrough. Four fire engines were in attendance from Grangetown and Middlesbrough.

"All persons accounted for. We left the scene at 10.50pm."

The crews used four jets, four breathing apparatus, two thermal image cameras and positive pressure ventilation during the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact Cleveland Police on 101, quoting reference SE25020870
