Snow Cascades Down Mountain Towards Zermatt

The avalanche threat was raised from Level 4 to Level 5, the highest level, in Zermatt, Switzerland, on January 22 as snow came cascading down the mountain towards the town.

Helicopters were helping to evacuate people from Zermatt on Monday as avalanches continued to threaten the mountain ski resort. Zermatt Tourism closed the roads and railway lines between Tasch and Zermatt on January 20. In a statement issued on January 21, it said the 9,000 tourists staying at the resort were not in danger.
