Snow in London: Light flurries fall across parts of capital as cold snap grips

Snow has fallen across parts of London as a cold snap continues to grip the UK.

Light flurries of snow began to fall in parts of west London including in Ruislip on Tuesday afternoon.,

Delighted Londoners shared pictures and video on social media after white flakes began to fall.

Some joked that the light flurries would mean transport in the capital would immediately grind to a halt.

George Weightman wrote on Twitter: "Snow in London! Bracing for immediate train network collapse."

While Ryan Copeland said: "Here comes the snow!! Not looking forward to that commute into London tomorrow morning now."

John West from the Met Office told the Standard that the snow currently going through central London will clear.

He said: “The main snow event is coming through now and should pass. It will be dry and cold overnight with temperatures down to -1C in the south east.

“Any dampness can turn into ice and there ice an ice warning issued by the Met Office.”

Mr West added that tomorrow will have plenty of sunshine with “the risk of snow diminished.”

However there may be some wintery showers on the Kent coast.

The weather has promoted people to post a number of memes on social media, joking about the snow.

It comes after the Met Office warned that thundersnow could strike the US this week as temperatures plummet below zero.

Thundersnow is an unusual phenomenon that normally only occurrs during a few months of the year.
