Soccer Aid 2019: McFly’s Danny Jones to take part in charity match alongside Jamie Redknapp and Mo Farah

McFly’s Danny Jones has revealed that he’s joining the likes of Sir Mo Farah and Jamie Redknapp and taking part in a star-studded charity football match for Soccer Aid for Unicef 2019.

The singer and guitarist announced the news on Good Morning Britain, although he did accidentally tweet about his involvement the night before his appearance.

This year’s event – held at Stamford Bridge stadium and broadcast on ITV and STV – will see ‘England’ go up against ‘Soccer Aid World XI on Sunday 16 June.

‘England’ consists of players such as Farah and Redknapp, as well as former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman, ex-Liverpool striker Michael Owen and ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.

Fitness coach Joe Wicks, television presenters Mark Wright, Ben Shephard and Marvin Humes, former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole, Chelsea midfielder Katie Chapman and ex-Arsenal winger Rachel Yankey will also be playing.

It will be the first time female footballers have taken part.

The team will be managed by Sam Allardyce and GMB host Susanna Reid. Elsewhere, Soccer World XI will be overseen by Harry Redknapp and Piers Morgan.

The team consists of former One Direction member Niall Horan, ex-Tottenham striker Robbie Keane, former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt, singer Jack Savoretti, Line of Duty Martin Compston and Love Island winner Kem Cetinay.

Jones is no stranger to Soccer Aid, having joined the ranks in 2018. Back in 2016, he was set to take part in that year’s event but had to drop out at the last minute due to an injury.

Taking to Instagram to explain his absence, the 33-year-old posted a photograph of himself with his arm in a sling and wrote: “Fractured my elbow! Gutted is an understatement.

“All the team have looked after me @socceraid thanks guys. I’ll be there Sunday to support the guys. Cmon England!!”

During his recent interview with GMB, Jones told hosts Shephard and Kate Garraway that “it was awful” missing out.

“I was in the first day of training, and we train really hard for it, and I got tackled by Sol Campbell and I just landed funny and cracked my joint in my elbow and broke it.

“So I was out. I stayed with the lads and it was like being grounded and all your mates playing out. It’s not a nice feeling but it was amazing to be a part of it and see us win.”

It seems safe to assume that he’s very excited to don his football boots once more this year.
