Arsenal were assessing Sokratis Papastathopoulos on Wednesday after the central defender picked up an injury on international duty.

Sokratis came off at half-time during Greece’s 2-1 defeat to Finland on Monday with what appeared to be an ankle problem and he is a doubt for the Gunners’ clash with Leicester at Emirates Stadium on Monday.

An injury to Sokratis would leave manager Unai Emery light on centre-backs, with Konstantinos Mavropanos not expected back in training until the end of this month.

Laurent Koscielny — who this week retired from international football and criticised France coach Didier Deschamps — is aiming to return from an Achilles problem in November at the earliest.

Danny Welbeck, who withdrew from the England squad, and goalkeeper Petr Cech will also be assessed this week after hamstring problems.
