A soldier who was jailed for drowning his dog has been ordered to carry a photo of the dead animal in his wallet to remind him of his crimes.

John Garrett Barrow, 24, pleaded guilty to tying the puppy up in 2014 and throwing it into a pond in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Authorities say that Barrow used military-grade parachute cord to tie up 8-month old Labrador mix Riley, before throwing it into a lake.

He was arrested in January 2015 after the animal’s corpse washed up on the side of the pond.

It’s believed that Barrow had struggled to afford the animal before killing it, and neighbours had frequently provided donations to help him look after the animal.

Now, Supreme Court Judge Jim Ammons has now sentenced to Burrows to 30 days in jail and ordered him to undertake 100 hours of community service.

But in a rare move intended to remind Barrow of his crimes, he has also been ordered to carry a photo of Riley in his wallet.

Barrow is also banned from owning pets for five years as part of his plea agreement, but the felony conviction will be wiped from his record if he successfully follows the conditions set out by Judge Ammons.

His wife, Kelsey Caroline Barrow, is still awaiting trial for being an accessory in Barrow’s crimes.
