Large numbers of Afghans remained crowded around Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport, days after Afghanistan’s government fled the capital, leaving it to Taliban fighters.
On July 18, the Pentagon said that some 4,500 military personnel were present in Kabul, focused on securing the airport. According to reports, many Afghans who may be able to leave the country are stymied by Taliban checkpoints and curfews imposed by the militants.
