Solidarity March Held Outside Zimbabwean Consulate in South Africa

Tens of thousands of Zimbabweans celebrated on the streets of Harare, Bulawayo and other cities on November 18, stirred by the possibility of an end to Robert Mugabe’s rule after 37 years.

A demonstration was also held outside the Zimbabwean consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The demonstrations culminated a week of major political events in the country, starting when the Zimbabwean military seized power on November 15, after tanks appeared rolling into Harare and rumors of a coup began to circulate.

Movement for Democratic Change President and former Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai arrived in the capital on November 16 during talks between the military and the Mugabe regime over a timetable for his resignation.

The day before the demonstrations were held, Mugabe made his first appearance since the military takeover, attending a graduation ceremony at Zimbabwe Open University.

A statement from Tsvangirai portrayed the events as a peaceful transition of power, saying Mugabe would be asked to remain involved as a government adviser. Credit: Twitter/CollinsNyamadza via Storyful
