A year after its release, fans of Solo: A Star Wars Story have started a social media campaign for the movie to get a sequel.

While the Han Solo spin-off was well-received on the whole, it was widely considered a box office bomb and became the lowest-grossing movie in the Star Wars franchise.

The movie's ending left the possibility open for sequels, though none were ever confirmed and reports emerged that Disney had put plans for further anthology movies on hold following Solo's poor box office performance.

That hasn't stopped keen fans who still want a sequel, and almost exactly a year on from the movie's release they've managed to get #MakeSolo2Happen trending on social media.

Director Ron Howard seems to have given the idea his blessing, tweeting a smiley face in response to a fan tweet alongside a few fan retweets.

Talking last year, the director spoke about the idea of more Solo movies after star Alden Ehrenreich said he was contracted to do more movies.

"I think the fans are going to define all of that," Howard told Fandango. "I mean I think that Lucasfilm and Disney in casting actors, and particularly younger actors, want to see what happens and build upon that.

"Certainly, they want the commitment from the young actors, but there are no concrete plans. I think there's been a lot of creative energy and now marketing energy going behind this movie.

"I think these are exactly what they're meant to be, or what they're designed to be. They're single movies exploring the galaxy; but of course, as a company, I think they're going to be very interested to see how people respond to it and take it from there.

"This whole thing is kind of a cool, ambitious exploration of what the galaxy and the Star Wars sensibility can continue to mean to fans."

The next movie in the franchise, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, will be released on Thursday, December 19 in the UK and Friday, December 20 in the US.
