Somerset motorists face being diverted over the border into Devon to allow for a roundabout outside a growing town to be resurfaced. Somerset Council will be carrying out resurfacing on the B3227 Sandy's Moor roundabout on the eastern approach to Wiveliscombe from Thursday (June 13), making essential repairs to the crucial road which links the town to Taunton.

While the resurfacing will be carried out in the evenings until the following Wednesday (June 19), a diversion will be in place adding up to 36 miles to people's journeys. For larger vehicles, they will be diverted across the Devon border, across junction 27 of the M5 and following the A361 all the way to Tiverton.

The roundabout links the town to the Sandys Moor housing estate, comprising 94 recently completed homes, and the town's rural enterprise centre. Work will be carried out on the roundabout between 6:30pm and 11:30pm between June 13 and 19, with a road closure being in place during these times to protect the workforce.

Outside of these times, including at the weekend, the road will be open at normal. A council spokesman said: "We understand this will have an impact on road users and residents which is why we are doing the work in the evenings.

"Our team will do everything they can to minimise disruption. It’s important we carry out this work as the road is showing signs of wear and tear."

During the road closure, vehicles wishing to reach Wiveliscombe from the east will be diverted back along the B3227 to Milverton, before following the B3187 into Wellington and picking up the A38 westbound out of the town. They will then follow the A38 over the Devon border, cross the M5 and follow the A361 to Tiverton, before turning north on the A396 towards Bampton and finally rejoin the B3227 heading east - adding up to 36 miles to their journey.

Smaller vehicles may be able to use more local roads around Wiveliscombe to reach the town; however, these will not be formally advertised. For information on all the roadworks in your area, including any diversions, visit www.somerset.gov.uk/roads-travel-and-parking/roadworks-and-travel.
