Something VERY strange has happened to the M61 and M6 in Lancashire

There are few things I hate more than being stuck in traffic on the motorway. In fact, one of my biggest fears is being trapped in one of those hours-long closures after a crash - the type which leads to pictures of people stood outside their cars looking forlornly ahead of them.

A particular issue which I've written about many times is the congestion on the M61 and M6 at peak times. As I join the M61 from the M65 I always glance across over the bridge and my heart sinks every time when I see the red blinking lights as vehicles slow down for the traffic.

Until now. Because, over the last few weeks, I've noticed that even at 5pm the traffic on the M61 and M6 isn't anywhere near as bad as it usually is. And I can't think why.

Now, I don't want to jinx it, so hope that I'm not speaking too soon, but it's certainly a new and unexplained phenomenon that I'm happy to experience.

I've been racking my brains but there doesn't seem to be any reasonable explanation. I'm hoping someone else can suggest a cause because it's grinding my gears as to why this situation has suddenly improved.

Not only was the M61 perfectly clear but so was the M6 at Preston which is unheard of. In fact, I can't remember the last time the M6 was chock-a-block at Junction 31 other than a particularly bad crash a few weeks ago.

No matter what the reason for it is though, long may it continue, and perhaps I'll be able to write about something other than congestion on the motorway for a change!
