Authorities in New York have arrested a 30-year-old man after he allegedly drove to the sheriff’s office to turn in the dead body of his father.

The investigation began over the weekend when police in the town of Irondequoit, N.Y., were notified that Richard Fluegel Sr., 60, had not returned home on Sunday, Dec. 8, according to a statement from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.

Fluegel reportedly did not show up for a flight the next morning, per the statement.

On Monday, Irondequoit police and the Livingston County officials began investigating the matter.

Around 11:30 p.m. that day, the county’s emergency services received a call about a man who was in the parking lot of the sheriff’s office and allegedly wanted to turn in a dead body, per the statement.

Officers responding to the scene met Richard Fluegel Jr., the son of the missing man, the sheriff's office said. Police then found Fluegel Sr. fatally shot inside his son’s car, the statement alleges.

Investigators say the shooting occurred when the father and son were in the town of Ossian, roughly an hour from Irondequoit. No further details, such as the time of death, were shared in the sheriff’s statement.

A friend of Fluegel Sr. told 13 WHAM that the victim was a father of two who enjoyed traveling and riding motorcycles.

"He was a hell of a friend to everybody," Chris Norton told the outlet. "I don’t know one person who came across him and had anything bad to say about him."

On Wednesday, Norton wrote in a Facebook post, "RIP my Brother. Till we ride again, but I know you will be with me on every ride I take from now on, every cigar I [light] and every glass of bourbon I drink."
