Son Heung-Min is facing a lengthy period out after being forced off at half-time of Tottenham’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle United on Sunday with a hamstring injury.

Having scored four goals last week against Southampton and then hit the post and crossbar during the first-half against Newcastle, he did not reemerge for the second-half after feeling pain in his hamstring.

Manager Jose Mourinho, who was understandably upset at how his team had been denied victory following a hugely controversial late penalty for Newcastle, later confirmed that Son had suffered a serious setback.

Asked whether he expected to lose his forward for a long time, he simply replied “yes”. Dele Alli was also again left completely out of a third consecutive Premier League matchday squad.

Alli could leave before the transfer window closes although that decision could now be influenced by the severity of Son’s injury. Mourinho should also have the option of Gareth Bale next month, who watched Tottenham's draw from a corporate box and has signed on a season long loan from Real Madrid.

Bale has a knee injury that is expected to keep him out until at least the middle of October.

Son will be assessed on Monday in an attempt to determine the severity of the injury. It follows a punishing early-season schedule which, after only a condensed summer break following ‘Project Restart’, has seen Tottenham play five matches over the past 15 days.

They are also due to play Chelsea on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup before a Europa League fixture on Thursday and then Manchester United on Sunday in the Premier League.
