The long-awaited Sons of Anarchy spin-off is getting some more work under the hood before it reaches your screens.

The pilot episode for Mayans MC - which is based around SAMCRO's rival biker gang - will be reshot and a round of recasting will take place before any decision is made on whether the project will be greenlit (via Entertainment Weekly).

Revolution's J. D. Pardo was originally cast in the lead role as EZ Reyes, a Mayan MC prospect who struggles with his love of a good woman and his quest for vengeance against the cartel.

Also cast in the pilot were Battlestar Galactica and Blade Runner's Edward James Olmos, Fast & Furious actor John Ortiz and Once Upon a Time's Sarah Bolger (aka Princess Aurora). It's not clear which of them will remain with the project.

Defending the decision on Twitter, Sons of Anarchy creator and Mayans MC co-creator Kurt Sutter wrote: "This was the process for SOA. Shows Fox/FX's commitment to series. Allows me and [co-creator Elgin James] to improve cast, script, and direction!"

Part of that process will include bringing in Preacher, Grimm and The Strain veteran Norberto Barba to redirect the pilot episode.

The pilot for Mayans MC was officially ordered by US network FX back in December 2016, two years after the finale of its parent series Sons of Anarchy aired on FX in the US.

Although this spin-off is set after the events of Sons of Anarchy, Charlie Hunnam has hinted that he's still willing to reprise his role as Jax Teller in Mayans MC.
